History and Evolution of CNC machines

It all began in the 1940s, right after the World War II. The earliest version of CNC machines developed during that time basically numerically controlled or NC machines. Initially the fabrication and the manufacturing process was carried on by numerically controlled machine before the invention of CNC machines. These NC machines were created by John T Parsons. In 1960s and early 1970s the idea of computer-controlled machines began to circulate. By 1989 CNC machines became the industry standard.

The initial machines had punch cards with G codes. As these machines were hardwired it was difficult or rather impossible to change the pre-set parameters. The G-codes in the modern CNC machines are designed and controlled by computers. The whole set up allows you to do real-time adjustments.

In the modern times the entire CNC protocol is automated, the manufacturing process is pre-programmed leading to automation. The modern machines amalgamate several different functions into one cell and everything is controlled by the same program. The CNC process gives way to regularity and uniformity in the production of parts through automated techniques.

The best part about these machines is that they are accurate and a process using these machines can be repeated thousands of times giving the same accurate output each time. Hence a product can be replicated a thousand times. There would be no manual errors as it would be fully automated. Using CNC machines requires very less labour and saves a lot of manufacturing time.
